Arbor Day 2004

4th annual MCW tree planting sets new standard for community participation

MAY 2004—This year's Arbor Day celebration took tree planting on the regional trail system to a new level, drawing a record number of volunteers and involving a wider range of planting sites than ever before.

With help from Tree Trust experts, more than 250 volunteers, including several organizations as well as individuals and families, made quick work of planting 187 trees at five locations along the Midtown Greenway and Southwest Regional Trail.

"It was a great success made possible by a great team of players," said Jim Campbell, Chair of the MCW Partnership.

"The event is uniting communities along the trail system and reaching out to more people who use the trails each year," said Campbell. "The best part was seeing the amazing number of children here, helping and playing and enjoying the music show. They're the reason we do this event, to make our metro a more united, more beautiful, more accessible place for future generations."

For the first time, the 2004 event featured family entertainment, an environmental drama and musical performance from Tricia and the Toonies.

Peace Coffee and Whole Foods Market donated food and beverages.
