Background
James R. Campbell became Group Executive Vice President for the Minnesota Banking Group of Wells Fargo & Company on November 2, 1998, with the merger involving Norwest Corporation and Wells Fargo & Company. In 2003 he retired as the chairman and chief executive officer of Wells Fargo Bank Minnesota.

He was born in May 24, 1942 in Byron, Minnesota. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Minnesota.

Campbell began his 36-year financial services career with Norwest in 1964 as a bank trainee. In 1988, he became president and chief executive officer of Norwest Bank Minnesota. That same year saw the appointment of his additional title of executive vice president, Norwest Corporation.

Campbell is director for Minnesota Business Partnership and Minnesota Center for Corporate Responsibility. He is chairperson of Abbott Northwestern Hospital's Board of Trustees and is a trustee of the Tournament Players Club, the Emma B. Howe Memorial Foundation, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He serves on the boards of directors for Allianz Life Insurance, Allina Health System, Minnesota Meeting and Phillips Partnership. He is Co-Chair of the Midtown Community Works which is a multi-sector partnership of government, business and nonprofit organizations focused on the revitalization of the Midtown Greenway. He was the 1998 United Way General Campaign Chair and remains on its executive council. He is on the board of trustees at the University of Minnesota Foundation and serves as a senior vice president on the Foundation's Executive Committee

He is a past director and/or trustee for many organizations including Courage Center, Junior Achievement, Minneapolis Foundation, Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, Children's Home Society and Westminster Presbyterian Church. He is also past chair of the University of Minnesota Foundation Board of Trustees. He was also the recipient of the 1999 University of Minnesota Regents Award.
