Faces of Lake Street's small business community

Mark Simon

Roberts Shoes

740 E. Lake Street

"This is not our first reconstruction of Lake Street. We've seen it twice now and we're making it through again. All these years, driving to work from the west on Lake Street, I could see the improvement steadily moving east and now it is here. The redevelopment on Chicago and Lake will work as the center of the wheel, radiating and expanding farther out. In three years there will be very little property not being used".

Under the motto “Hardly any foot we can’t fit,” Roberts Shoes is a destination business known for its quality and excellent and dedicated customer service. The store's owner, Mark Simon, is also a well known face in the neighborhood. He inherited Roberts Shoes from his father-in-law, who opened it in 1937 when Lake Street used to be just like today, a very happening place. Mark has been working on Lake Street since 1982 and has been very involved in the neighborhood and business community. For 10 years he was the president of the Chicago-Lake Business Association and has been involved in positioning the corner for redevelopment projects, which so far including the Midtown Exchange, the Minnesota Workforce Center, and the Carne Asada restaurant.
